Welcome to Within the Whale, an immersive educational experience like no other in Maine.
Our traveling outreach program brings the ocean to life through interactive lessons with a life-size inflatable humpback whale, allowing participants to step inside and explore 3D anatomy firsthand.
With programming tailored for all ages and aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards, we aim to inspire a deeper understanding of marine mammals and foster a lasting commitment to ocean conservation.

Meet Chunk, the Inflatable Humpback whale
Our inflatable whale design is inspired by a real whale, Chunk. Chunk was a well-loved Humpback whale regularly spotted in the Gulf of Maine.
She was around 10 years old, and about 40 feet long. She was missing a chunk of her dorsal fin.
Chunk sadly passed away in the summer of 2024, but we are continuing her story through our science lessons.
About Us
Within the Whale was founded by Wildlife Educator, Jessica Woodend.
With a degree in Natural Resource Management, and driven by her passion for connecting communities with the wonders of wildlife and conservation, Jessica has built a dynamic career in science education.
She’s led impactful science programs, fostered conservation partnerships, and excels at making environmental topics accessible and inspiring. Through Within the Whale, she’s dedicated to connecting people with marine life and conservation through immersive, hands-on education.
In her spare time, you’ll find her volunteering with marine conservation organizations, hiking, beach combing, and working on her pollinator garden.
