Meet Chunk, the Inflatable Humpback Whale
Chunk was a beloved humpback whale frequently seen in the Gulf of Maine, known for her distinctive dorsal fin, which had a "chunk" missing—hence her name. At around 10 years old and 40 feet long, she was a familiar and cherished presence for marine enthusiasts and researchers alike.
Tragically, Chunk passed away in the summer of 2024 after becoming entangled in fishing nets off the coast of Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Despite efforts to disentangle her, she succumbed to the ordeal, highlighting the dangers marine life faces from human activities.
Her story lives on through educational initiatives like "Within the Whale," a program that uses a life-sized inflatable model of Chunk to teach people about marine biology and conservation. This interactive experience allows participants to step inside the inflatable whale, exploring its anatomy while learning about the challenges faced by humpback whales and the importance of ocean conservation.
Chunk's legacy serves as a poignant reminder of the need to protect marine ecosystems and the creatures that inhabit them. Her story continues to inspire efforts to reduce threats like fishing gear entanglements and to foster a deeper appreciation for marine life.
